THE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE RESOURCE CENTRE
For students:

To foster a life-long love of literature and to develop a familiarity and confidence with all forms of information.
For staff and wider school community:
To provide a friendly and efficient service and to be a place that’s easily accessed.
Our aims are:
  • To provide staff and students with an increasingly wide range of resources appropriate to their needs;
  • To develop confidence and independence in accessing these resources;
  • To work cooperatively with classroom teachers in planning and resourcing the curriculum; and finally,
  • To provide the base where a love of reading is fostered and encouraged for all students.

ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE A
LIBRARY BAG FOR BORROWING
Book Club
Varsity College operates the Scholastic Book Club system for our school community. Our Library-Aide manages Book Club through the Library. There are eight issues of Book Club throughout the year, with catalogues sent home for families to peruse and to return orders.

This service provides a convenient way for families to buy good reading material for their children at a reasonable price and earns the school “bonus points” for us to select items from Scholastic to add to the school collection.
Each year the Resource Centre conducts a Book Fair. This has become a tradition, with the 'Family Fun Night' held during Book Fair Week, involving students and their families as well as several teachers and volunteers participating and helping on the night. Not only is it a fun-filled event, it is a fantastic fund-raiser for the school.
Book Fair
In 2003 and 2004, Varsity College sold over $10,000.00 and $13,000.00 worth of merchandise, respectively, in just one week – and earning the school over $3,000.00 in commission to put into resources for our students. Varsity College now holds the record for any other State School in both years.
Library Staff
The Junior Resource Centre is staffed by two part-time teacher librarians and two teacher-aides - one full-time and the other part-time. We are fortunate to also have several volunteers who assist with the day-to-day tasks in the Library, helping operations run smoothly for our 1000 plus student body. We welcome offers of help from our school community - it's a great way to help in a large school as well as get to know other parents.
THE POLICY IS - 'NO BAG, NO BORROWING'
