The Varsity College Junior School aims to be a school of excellence. The school opened in 2002, and currently has an enrolment of approximately 600 students across Years 4, 5 and 6. There are 23 classes across these year levels. Student numbers in each class range from 23 to 30.
‘Connecting with Kids’ is our aim at Junior School, and the focus of much of our time and energy. We believe that if we can establish positive relationships with our students and motivate them through high quality learning experiences, we will achieve a high level of success. We also believe in setting and enforcing high standards and expectations. Studies have repeatedly shown that this in turn, leads to high achievement.
Structure
We have distinct year level classes with no composite classes. Student numbers in each class range from 23 to 30. Some classes operate in a co-operative teaching arrangement, while others work as single entities.
One Year Six class studies Chinese intensively through our Chinese Immersion Program.
Curriculum
An integrated approach to teaching and curriculum design is evident in our Curriculum framework. Our curriculum has a large emphasis on developing and refining literacy and numeracy skills, as well as allowing students to work on real life tasks, rather than separate subjects, that are relevant to their lives and encourage deep engagement in learning.
Information and Communication Technology is an integral part of our curriculum, with all students learning skills to enable them to be a part of the digital revolution.
All students participate in weekly sporting competitions as well as Health and Physical education classes. All students attend weekly music and art lessons, and students have the opportunity to learn an instrument through the Instrumental Music Program. All students learn the Chinese (Mandarin) language.
Our motto is the three E’s:
• Enthusiasm • Excellence • Enjoyment
I welcome students and their families to the Varsity College Junior School community and encourage their active participation in this exciting stage of their educational journey.
